Our History

The Roman Catholic Malayalees of Edmonton (RCME) was founded in 2016 by a dedicated group of Malayalee Catholic families in Edmonton, Alberta. What began as a small circle of families has now grown into a dynamic, multi-unit community committed to spiritual growth, cultural identity, and collective service. RCME was officially registered as a non-profit tier in the Province of Alberta on June 13, 2017.

With the dedicated guidance of our Spiritual Directors, and the support of Bishop Rev. Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan and Bishop Rev. Dr. Sebastian Thekethecheril, we have grown into a thriving community of over 90 families. Demonstrating significant growth, the community has expanded from a single Basic Christian Community (BCC) family unit into three vibrant units: St. Antony (serving the South East), St. Jude (covering the South West), and Holy Spirit (encompassing the North & West).

RCME fosters an environment of prayer, fellowship, and service through activities such as monthly Holy Mass, catechism classes for children, and the observance of significant liturgical events. Our members are actively involved in various ministries across Edmonton Catholic parishes, particularly at Corpus Christi and St. Theresa’s parishes. Their participation extends to various ministries such as the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Women’s League, Eucharistic Ministry, Choir & Sound Ministry, Readers & Lectors Ministry, Altar Servers, and St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Our community is also committed to charitable initiatives and fosters unity through shared events like pilgrimages, the Pope's visit, nativity celebrations, parish rosary, Way of the Cross, and ecumenical fellowship with other Christian traditions.

Our Vision and Mission

RCME envisions the same path as that of the Roman Catholic Church vision rooted in the values and vision of Jesus, as expressed in the Gospel. Our mission is to continue the plan of salvation definitively begun by God the Father in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ and being fulfilled by the Holy Spirit. Our primary objective is to foster both the faith and the overall well-being of the Roman Catholic Malayalee community in Edmonton and its surrounding areas, with a focus on the following three core values.

Our Core Values

Spiritual
Social
Traditional
Cultural

We help our community members deepen their faith by nurturing a more meaningful prayer life and guiding them to develop leadership rooted in Christian principles. Through catechism classes, retreats, and spiritual gatherings, we encourage a full sacramental life and a deep appreciation for the Word of God.

We are dedicated to putting Christ's teachings into action. RCME encourages active fellowship among families, promoting unity, empathy, and mutual support. We do this by engaging in Church-approved social activities and by initiating action programs to serve those in need, all while embracing a spirit of service rooted in the Beatitudes.

Honoring our roots, the Roman Catholic Malayalee Community of Edmonton (RCME) is committed to preserving the sacred religious traditions passed down through generations of Kerala's Catholic heritage. We integrate these traditions, from devotional practices to liturgical customs, into our spiritual life in Edmonton, ensuring that the richness of our faith remains vibrant and alive.

Our community celebrates the beauty of our Malayalee cultural identity while also embracing the diversity of Canadian society. Through events, festivals, and language-based programs, we promote cultural pride and intergenerational connection, ensuring that our heritage continues to inspire and unify both present and future generations.

We Stand strong for:

Faith

At the heart of RCME is a steadfast commitment to the Catholic faith, which guides every aspect of our community life. Through liturgical celebrations, catechism, prayer, and sacraments, we nurture a deeper relationship with Christ and encourage each member to grow spiritually in a way that is both personal and communal.

Community

RCME thrives on a strong sense of togetherness and shared purpose. We believe that true Christian living begins in fellowship—where families support one another, gather in prayer, and celebrate life’s moments together. Our Basic Christian Community (BCC) units form the foundation of this belonging and connection.

Service

We are called to live our faith through action, and service is central to that mission. RCME actively engages in parish ministries and charitable initiatives, encouraging members to contribute their time, talents, and compassion to the wider Church and the society we are part of.

Tradition

We value and uphold the rich spiritual and cultural traditions of Kerala, integrating them into our community life in Canada. From devotional practices to family values and community celebrations, our heritage strengthens our identity and enriches our faith experience.

Leadership

Guided by the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of our spiritual leaders, RCME is committed to developing responsible and faith-filled leadership within the community. We encourage every member, young and old, to take initiative in building a stronger, spiritually vibrant future together.
